A tribute to the Australian and New Zealand soldiers who fought for us all... lest we forget...

For the fallen by Laurence Binyon (1869-1943)

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres.
There is a music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncountered:
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables at home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England's foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
As the stars are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end they remain.

They shall grow not we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them

That poem was written about and dedicated to English soldiers... which makes it seem strange that we use it for ANZAC Day. I guess we are still a part of the Commonwealth so hey, why not.

Dawn service this morning was just awesome as usual, it makes me proud to be an Aussie and so grateful to be living in this sweet country of ours. Another year passes us by but we will never forget those that fought for our freedom...

Lest we forget.

Some joker at the service I attended must have thought it was Australia day. Why else would he turn up in a superman t-shirt with an Australian flag for a cape? It takes all kinds I guess and tolerance is what this great nation is all about (or should be).

'Oath. We live in the best country on earth, without a doubt. And it’s only because of the self-sacrifice of some of the bravest, valiant, and dignified true blue hero’s – diggers – that literally sacrificed their youth, and their lives to go fight and defend our majestic continent – is why we live free and prosper today.

Lest We Forget.
