The videos won't run smoothly

Postby Dv8 » Thu Jun 22, 2006 9:57 am

Im just speaking for myself here but people, you need a high spec computer for these clips to run fluently... I downloaded this file a few minutes ago (http://www.aussiesexposed.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1847) to see what the fuss was about and it didnt freeze once. So therefore the file itself is fine, no two ways about it... The video just has a massive bitrate (3500kbs) that requires a decent computer setup to run, that means a decent CPU and a decent amount of ram. If you still have probs then its possibly because you have other proggies running in the background that are taking up processing power or you simply have glitchy codecs installed. I could drop this files bitrate (lose quality) and I guarantee it wont glitch at all on you...thats cuz its all your comp can handle. Ok? So people please stop bunging on that my vids are glitchy when they aren't... They work fine, I test every one before uploading.

Well said Dv8...if I could just add one thing...
Use a decent video player aswell..(not Windows Media Player)
Freeware and open source players are usually alot better and use less memory and cpu power.
There are a list of players here  http://www.aussiesexposed.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=63
please use them.
With what Dv8 mentioned and these players I am sure everyone will have fewer problems.

Thanks quickurn... Just to clarify something, when I say a decent computer is needed, it doesnt even really need to be that good. I only have a cheap 2.6 gig Intel celeron and 786MB of RAM... under $300 worth of computer with those items. Some people I swear are using ancient pentium 2s & 3s and wonder why they have problems playing HQ vid clips  Sometimes a simple computer reboot can help but be sure to play the clip before you frag out your RAM by running other programs...

Since going from a pentium 4 1.4gz/256ram to a dual core/2gb ram all these vids work perfect now :)

I have an Athlon 1.14 ghz with 512 mb ram and a Maya Radeon 9000 Pro video card and none of the DV8 video files work for me. Should I get a new video card?

Your CPU is outdated... check out the minimum requirements to run DivX from their very own website -

http://www.divx.com/divx/system_requirements.php

take note of what it says for "DivX High Definition profile video" and that is what you roughly need to watch my later vid postings -

Recommended:
Pentium IV 2.8GHz CPU or better
    128MB RAM or better
Graphics card with 128MB of RAM or more and supporting 24-bit color or better

You've got enough RAM and your video card has 64 meg onboard so it is fine under "Minimum requirements". Your CPU is too slow even at minimum requirements (2.4Ghz CPU minimum) so that is what you will need to upgrade. This may also mean a new motherboard to handle the new CPU. If you do go down that path, make sure your old RAM fits into the new motherboard or you might even need a new batch of that...

If you want to be able to watch any high bitrate HD videos online, not just mine, you would want to get your comp up to spec... i've only got a 2.6Ghz CPU which scrapes into "minimum requirements" but not "recommended requirements", all videos run smooth for me as long as I dont have too many other background processes running... sometimes I have to do the following -
(This is for XP users, not sure how to do it on Vista and others) When playing a vid that is a little glitchy you can set the priority of your player a bit higher by doing the ctr+alt+del thing and right clicking whatever player is running in your "Processes" list (eg. bsplayer.exe) and "Set Priority" to "AboveNormal"... you could try a higher setting but it may cause a freeze. Anyway this can make things a bit smoother for those on the requirements edge like myself...

Thanks for the detailed reply. I've just realised that I have several videos from this site, some of them clearly say HD on the screen, and some of them DV8's and they work fine, but it seems all the newer ones don't work much for me at all. I get about 1 second of motion then it freezes.

...like I said, your CPU is clearly letting you down if you want to watch high bitrate HD videos... some of the older videos i've posted might have a HD logo on the screen but it doesn't mean they were compressed using a codec set on a high def profile... I think you better read what I said in the previous post again. It clearly states on DivX.com what the minimum requirements are to run their "High Definition profile" videos (HD Xvid would require roughly the same). Your CPU does not meet those requirements, it isn't even half the minimum CPU speed needed :) The older videos I posted with HD logos were actually compressed using whatever codec (Xvid, DivX etc) set on "Home Theatre profile" which requires less CPU power to run. In the link I provided above it says that DivX Home Theatre profile only requires a 733Mhz CPU (minimum) which is why the old vids run smooth for you... anyway I hope that made some sense, good luck with it ;)
