Media Player says "codec acquired" but when it plays all I get is the sound (no picture).

Yeah, I spent ages Googling for codecs last night for another file I have that won't play. It's really hard to locate the right codec when you don't know what it is & Media Player won't tell you what it wants. I downloaded two; DivX & Xvid but neither of them helped... :x

Code: Select all
--- File Information ---
File Name:                                      2007-02-11(Sun)PM0141-CHD09.mpg.AVI
File Size (in bytes):                           40,970,882

--- Video Information ---
Video Codec Type:                        MP4V
Video Codec Name:                        MPEG-4
Duration (hh:mm:ss):                            1:32.899
Video Bitrate (kbps):                           3358

try using quicktime (quicktime alternative is preferable) if you have it installed...or download one of the codec packs from here. Also download G-Spot, it gives codec and all video info you'll need.

But I'm pretty sure that vlc plays it without installing anything else...could be wrong though.

Yep. VLC plays practically anything and never relies on system codecs.

That said, ffdshow is a really great codec that will handle almost all types of video (except quicktime and realmedia).

Yeah, I read about G-Spot & MLC Player a couple of nights ago when I was trying to track down all the codecs. I thought about MLC but then I thought I've already got WM Player, WinAmp (full), QuickTime (full), RealPlayer Gold, Video Redo, Power DVD & Nero ShowTime so I thought "don't tell me I need yet ANOTHER media player!"

It sounds like G-Spot might be worth looking at. So you just use that bugger to click on the video & it tells you which codec to download? :?

yup g-spot is great. drag the file into the program (once it is running) and it tells you what you need and if you need a codec.

Okay, I downloaded G-Spot & ran it on the file & this just added further to the mystery....

In the Video section on the right hand side of the window, where it says "Codec" the box is empty & underneath that for "Status" the box says "Ready (283 codecs loaded)"

But...

One the left hand side of the window in the "Container" box it says:

"File Type: RealMedia (.RM)
Mime Type: application/vnd.rn-realmedia"

The thing that doesn't make sense is that it's two files (ie: one mpeg & one avi) so they are not RealPlayer files at all. But, I did try them both with RealPayer which just said:

"Cannot play the file: The format is not supported"

Does anyone know how to make any sense of this?
:?

now thats weird. I have never had that one happen before. maybe try a real player alternative codec or uninstall all your codecs etc. and just install some of the above mentioned ones fresh.

 I gave up & decided it wasn't worth further worrying about.

I had another frustrating experience last night that you may find amusing. I decided I wanted to copy a couple of my DVDs onto my hard drive as mpegs or AVIs so I read about it on the 'net & various message boards said you had to download a programme called SmartRipper.

I downloaded SmartRipper & tried it on the first DVD. There are three shows on the DVD & I ran SmartRipper FOUR times & each time it only copied the second show & ignored the first & second one.

I tried the other DVD because it only has the one show on it & it did copy all that. It broke it into two parts but it copied it all.

SmartRipper made them into files called .VOB(?) or something...

I then decided to use Ulead to stick the two halves back together & convert it to an AVI but Ulead said it couldn't read the files. Damn!

I have the full version of Nero 7 so tried to figure it out with that but that didn't work. I also have VideoRedo but I can't figure out how to use that thing for anything!

After a few hours wasted, I gave up, sulked & watched television...

.vob is a standard dvd extension, you should be able to do plenty with the files from there...

Nah, I couldn't open it with somne of my media players & none of them could convert them to avi, wmv or mpeg.

I actually put this query on the Computer & Software section on Aussie Celebs & got a couple of interesting answers. I'd be interested to hear your opinion if you get time. :D

Too many programs rely on installed codecs.

VideoRedo is excellent - but only for MPEG to MPEG conversions.
However, it reads VOBs very well - if VideoRedo can play the video then you know the file is valid MPEG-2.
If you suspect the VOB has errors in it, use VideoRedo to save an error-free copy.

- Locate the start of the section you want - click "Sel. start"
- Locate the end of the section you want - click "Sel. End"
- Click "Add Selection" at the bottom"
- Define and add multiple sections if you want
- Click "Save as..." at the bottom to save a new MPEG file

Next I recommend AviDemux2 to recompress the video.
It uses it's own built-in codecs, so it won't be affected by any unusual codecs that you might have installed.

AviDemux2 has a decent DVD to AVI tutorial here:
http://www.avidemux.org/admWiki/index.p ... DVD_to_AVI

You already have a VOB to start with, so skip the "Getting a usable VOB file using MPlayer" step.

Good luck!
