Quicktime has native mp4 support.
VideoLAN Client (VLC) should also do the trick - it play almost anything you throw at it.
If you're feeling a little more adventurous, recent versions of the ffdshow codec have mp4 support and will allow you to play mp4 files in pretty much any program.
If you choose the ffdshow route, I recommend installing Vista Codec Package v4.2.0 and the MediaPlayerClassic addon pack - it will configure the codec correctly so that almost all videos play through ffdshow.
VLC: http://www.videolan.org/
Advanced Vista Codec Pack: http://shark.blackteabag.ch/
Quicktime: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

Which decoder filter the video is rendering through?
(right-click the video window while playing and choose "Filters" to see a list).

I just updated my QuickTime to the latest free version (which I wish I didn't because at least my older version was a full one) & now I find that I can play them in the browser, but if I download them & use QuickTime to play the downloaded file, all I get is the audio with no picture...
The difference between ignorance and apathy? I don't know, and I couldn't care less.
